Jon Bristow, Morgan Demars, Erin Fisker, Gus Fisker, Allison Holm, Nick Kramp, Amanda Metcalf, Kendall
Swenson, and myself, spent a week together in the Boundary Waters: we worked, laughed, prayed, sang, ate, talked, played,
took turns sharing devotions, and admired our creator God’s majestic canvas.
I want to take a moment to share some of the great moments of our trip. In no particular order, here are ten great moments
from this years Boundary Waters trip.
1. We
watched a Seagull dive bomb two Bald Eagles who were sitting in trees on Disappointment Lake.
2. We managed to carry
nine packs, and three canoes across a 240 rod portage (3960 feet) in a single trip.
3. Allison and Morgan were
pulled down an algae filled decline into the lake by Kendall.
4.
While playing the card game Ojobinojoe, Erin repeatedly beat everyone on the number
7.
5. Gathering firewood while it hailed.
6.
Watching two men from the Forest Service look in awe as Kendall finished off two
Double Bacon Cheeseburger meals after the trip. (Jon’s two Cheeseburger meals and Nick’s two BLT meals were almost
as impressive).
7. Waking up the final morning at sunrise, just in time to see mist rising up off of the lake creating
one of the most beautiful views that I have ever seen.
8.
Nick very nearly jumping off a log and into our dinner.
9. Taking turns telling
two-minute mysteries that probably should have been called twenty-minute mysteries.
10. Listening to the youth
choose morning and evening devotions and praying the group to bed or to the canoes.
It was a great trip that was a blessing to me. As the naturalist Sigurd Olson said, “And
so it will be for centuries to come. [People] will always be drawn to the last frontiers, where they can recapture some of
the basic satisfactions and joys of the race, renew their sense of mystery and wonder… Even those who cannot travel
will gain comfort from knowing far horizons are there.” May those of you who haven’t made it out into God’s
creation for a while gain comfort from knowing far horizons are there.
